Items you will need
- 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X' with the 'Acceleration Expansion' pack or
- 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X SP2 Standard Edition' or
- 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X'
You're flying a fighter jet and suddenly something goes wrong. Your nose goes down and you start plummeting toward the ground, the oil pressure is dropping and the plane's landing gear stuck -- there's no way you can make a safe landing. Unfortunately, most of the time you're going to crash with the plane, because most planes in 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X' don't have ejection seats. However, if you purchase a plane with an ejection seat, such as the AFS-Design Royal Air Force Jets, IRIS - Airforce Series - Tomcat (FSX) or Chengdu J-10 'Vigorous Dragon' you can use the cockpit controls or a key sequence to save yourself from crashing.
AFS-Design Royal Air Force Jets
Purchase, download and install the AFS-Design Royal Air Force Jets (link in Resources).
Launch File Explorer, navigate to the folder where you downloaded the add-on, select the 'Compressed Folder Tools' tab and choose 'Extract All' to unzip the file you downloaded.
Open another File Explorer window and navigate to the folder with the Microsoft Flight Simulator X files; for example, 'Program Files (x86)Microsoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator X.'
Switch back to the first File Explorer window with the unzipped add-on you downloaded. Double-click the 'Read Me' file and review the instructions for installing the add-on in 'Flight Simulator.'
Copy the contents of the main folder to the 'SimObjectsAirplanes' folder. Copy the contents of the Effects folder to the 'Effects' folder and the contents of the Gauges folder to the 'Gauges' folder. Copy other folders according to the instructions in the 'Read Me' file.
Launch 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X,' choose 'Select Aircraft' and select the Aermacchi fighter. Fly the fighter and press 'Shift-E' while flying to eject.
IRIS - Airforce Series - Tomcat (FSX)
Purchase, download and install the IRIS - Airforce Series - Tomcat (FSX) (link in Resources).
Set the 'Ejection Seat Arming Handle' to 'Down' during your pre-flight routine to ensure the ejection seat is armed. Confirm that the 'Ejection Seat Not Armed' caution light is not illuminated.
Climb to an altitude of at least 2000 feet if your 'Eng Fire' warning light comes on and stays illuminated or you determine that you can't make a safe landing. Reduce your throttle as much as possible and select the 'Ejection Seat Handle' on the front cockpit instrument panel to eject.
Pull the Ejection Seat Handle to eject if you're descending in a deep stall that you can't recover from and you reach an altitude of 7,000 feet.
Eject from the plane if the 'HYD/OIL PRESS' warning light illuminates and your engine oil pressure is below 15 or your hydraulic pressure is below 1000 and you can't lower your landing gear with the 'ALTN GEAR' handle or use your speed breaks.
Chengdu J-10
Purchase, download and install the Bear Studios Chengdu J-10 'Vigorous Dragon.'
Locate the Water Rudder Handle that's normally used for water craft -- it has been reassigned for use as the ejection seat controller in the Chengdu J-10.
Press 'Ctrl-W' or 'Shift-W' to eject.
Warnings
The instructions in this article apply to Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8 and to 'Microsoft Flight Simulator X.' Other versions of Windows or 'Flight Simulator' might require different steps to install aircraft add-ons.

Reinstallation process
- Create a backup of everything that is (or may be) important for you!
- Deregister add-ons licences registered in FSX.
- Remove add-ons through the Control Panel.
- Remove FSX through the Control Panel.
- Remove leftover FSX files.
- Remove additional FSX data.
- Remove registry information (optional – only for advanced users).
1. Backup!
Always keep all data that can be used again – settings and config files, saved flights, etc. Copy them to a backup folder.
Before you delete any folders – make sure that there are no important files among them. In doubt – just make a copy of the whole folder or simply rename it (it’s a good way to keep folders you intend to remove – rename them adding _backup to their name and leave them in the same location.
Keep in mind that you (probably) have a very large hard drive – a few additional megabytes (or even gigabytes) will not make a difference. I suggest you keep copies of all the folders I mentioned in part 6 of this guide.
2. Deregister your add-ons
Some add-ons (like PMDG planes or FlightBeam and FSDreamTeam sceneries) require a licence key that is registered in your FSX (and on a publisher’s server). To reinstall these add-ons without any problems – remember to deregister them.
You can deregister PMDG 777 using planes FMC.
FlightBeam, FSDreamTeam and several other companies use an Addon Managera (you will find it under Add-ons in FSX menu). You will deregister these add-ons using the same window that you used to register them.
3. Remove (uninstall) add-ons through the Control Panel
The next step to uninstall your FSX is add-on removal. Go through “Programs and Features” section of the Control Panel and uninstall some add-ons. Which add-ons should you uninstall?
Do not remove sceneries that you have added to your Scenery Library manually unless you think that the installer added some files to your core FSX folder (for example the installer can add something to the Effects folder). I have a folder where I keep all my “manually added” sceneries (mostly freeware but also several payware that have normal installers). This folder “lived through” several FSX installations. Keeping it saves me time when I reinstall my system or FSX.
A note – if you have a folder like this (I called my Sceneries_Direct – for the direct installation of this sceneries) – do not add any sceneries that make you add files to “Effects” folder. Alternatively you can create an Effects folder inside your Sceneries_Direct to keep copies of all effects. Then – if you want to reinstall your FSX you will just copy the contents of entire Effects folder to your new FSX installation.
If your are not sure whether to remove any files or not – remove them and install them again in your new FSX.
Do not remove external software that only connects to FSX. For example:
- Active Sky Next
- REX 4 Texture Direct
- REX, REX Essentials, REX Overdrive, REX Essentials Overdrive
Once again – when in doubt – reinstall.
Remove add-ons that are integrated with your FSX. Especially all the add-ons that modified dll.xml or exe.xml files.
Usuń all add-on planes. It’s better to reinstall them into your new FSX.
Usuń the software that connects to Vatsim or IVAO networks.
Note – to avoid confusion let me clarify this – in this step you need only to remove add-ons that have uninstall entries in “Programs and Features”. At this point you do not need to manually delete any files from FSX folder.
4. Remove Flight Simulator X throught the Control Panel
Continue your work in Programs and Features – remove your FSX. If you have Acceleration or Software Development Kit – remove them too (preferably – before removing FSX core installation).
5. Remove FSX files
Find FSX folder (it will still be there) and delete it with all it’s contents.
6. Remove program and system data for FSX
Remove FSX related folders:
- C:UsersUsernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftFSX
- C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftFSX
- C:ProgramDataMicrosoftFSX
If you are removing FSX:Steam Edition installed in dual mode – remove folders called FSX-SE.
Remove folders called “Microsoft Flight Simulator X Files” and “Microsoft Flight Simulator X” (or similar) from:
- Documents
- Pictures
7. Remove registry information (with caution!)
Only for advanced users.
If you remove any any information related to system operation – your Windows may be damaged. In worst case – damages can be unrecoverable.
You act on your own risk.
You have been warned! We are done with disclaimers – let’s get to work.
Do it only if you have to!
Removal of registry information should not be necessary. If everything works fine – skip this point. It’s better to install FSX and in case of trouble uninstall it once again than to go to registry at first try.
This step may be useful for those who had FSX and wish to make a clean installation of FSX Steam Edition. Still – I recommend that you tried to install FSX:SE without cleaning your registry. Only if it installs in dual mode – make the changes I described. (You can distinguish dual installation by FSX-SE folder name in C:UsersUsernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftFSX).
When should you clean registry information
You should clean registry information only if you feel that something is wrong and you can not find any other reason.
I have cleaned all FSX related registry information because on my PC it was the only way to switch from a dual FSX + FSX:SE setup to a standalone FSX:SE.
Cleanup – step by step
Once again – do only what is necessary (If you feel that I am discouraging you from messing the registry – you are right!). Most of FSX related registry keys are harmless. I suggest you get though them on part at a time checking if you have done enough.
Basic FSX information in registry
Open your registry (open command prompt, then type regedit). If you do not know what am I writing about – better stop now!
The main FSX entry is located in one of this locations (depending on a system an FS version):
- 32 bit / FSX
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator10.0 - 32 bit / FSX:SE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareDovetail GamesFSX10.0 - 64 bit / FSX
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator10.0 - 64 bit / FSX:SE
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeDovetail GamesFSX10.0 - FSX
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator10.0 - FSX:SE
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareDovetail GamesFSX10.0
Other entries/keys
For me it was not enough to delete the main entries. The information about dual installation was located somewhere else. To remove it – I searched for all keys that included my FSX and FSX:SE paths:
- C:FSX
- Z:SteamsteamappscommonFSX
You should change this paths to your’s.
To make sure I cleared everything I also searched for Data folders:
- C:UsersUsernameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftFSX
- C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalMicrosoftFSX
Reboot!
Before you reinstall FSX – reboot your PC.
